In a tragic incident late Saturday night, a massive fire broke out at the Birch by Romeo Lane club in Arpora, North Goa, resulting in the death of at least 23 people. Among the victims, 20 were men and three were women, most of whom were employees working in the restaurant’s basement.

Police officials suspect a cylinder explosion as the likely cause of the blaze, which occurred around 12:04 am. BJP MLA Michael Lobo stated that the majority of the deaths were due to suffocation, as panicked individuals ran towards the basement during the fire. He confirmed that while some tourists were among the victims, the majority were local workers.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the site and revealed that the nightclub had not complied with fire safety regulations. Describing the incident as deeply disturbing, the CM ordered a thorough investigation and promised strict action against the club’s management and the officials who permitted its operation despite safety lapses.

Following the tragedy, MLA Michael Lobo emphasized the urgent need for safety audits of all clubs across Goa. He remarked that Goa has always been considered a safe destination by tourists, but this incident is alarming and such events must be prevented in the future.
