Farmers in Dharmapuri Announce Election Boycott Over Delayed Water Project

Dharmapuri, March 17: Farmers in parts of Dharmapuri district, particularly in the Harur and Papireddipatti areas, have declared an election boycott in response to the prolonged delay in implementing the Thenpennai Surplus Water Scheme.

This protest centers on a long-pending lift irrigation project proposed by the Tamil Nadu government in 2019. The project aims to divert surplus floodwater from the Thenpennai River by pumping water from the K. Ichambadi dam in Harur, facilitating irrigation for drought-prone areas across 12 panchayats.

Originally envisioned as a significant step to alleviate recurring water shortages in the region and enhance agricultural sustainability, farmers now claim that little to no progress has been made on the ground, despite years passing since its announcement.

Frustration among farmers is mounting due to inadequate irrigation facilities and persistent drought conditions. Local farmer organizations have decided to boycott the upcoming elections as a form of protest.

Plans are underway to display banners in 12 villages, signaling political candidates to refrain from campaigning in these areas.

Farmers have also resolved to formally inform the state government of their decision and urge immediate action on the project. The affected panchayats include A. Vellampatti, Maritipatti, Kelamoorappur, Vidukampatti, and Sellampatti.

They argue that this project has the potential to transform local water management and significantly reduce reliance on erratic rainfall.

In recent years, multiple petitions have been submitted to the Chief Minister, district officials, and various government departments demanding the project’s implementation. However, the lack of tangible progress has only fueled public discontent.

District administration officials have responded, stating that the responsibility for implementing the project lies with the state government. They have urged residents not to boycott the elections, emphasizing the importance of democratic participation and encouraging voters to exercise their rights responsibly.
