New Delhi, July 1: A Delhi court has remanded IPS officer Deepak Gehlawat, a 2012 batch officer from the Haryana cadre, to one day of custody with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with an alleged bribery case.
Gehlawat is currently on central deputation at the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in Delhi. He was presented in Rouse Avenue Court after being arrested by the CBI the previous day.
The CBI sought five days of custody for questioning the accused. However, the court partially accepted the agency’s request, allowing Gehlawat to be held for one day for further investigation.
Gehlawat’s lawyer opposed the CBI’s request for custody, arguing that the IPS officer had already cooperated with the investigation on four occasions. The defense further claimed that the ₹50,000 allegedly deposited in his bank account was merely an advance payment from the sale of his old car.
They also contended that no public servant receiving a bribe would deposit money into their personal bank account.
According to the CBI, the agency registered a case on June 8 against a Delhi police inspector and two private individuals. During the investigation, it was reportedly revealed that Gehlawat had solicited illegal bribes, claiming he could use his influence to help certain individuals involved in cases related to the sale of counterfeit drugs being investigated by the CBI in Puducherry.
Previously, the CBI had arrested Delhi police inspector Pradeep Singh and six other private individuals in connection with the case.
