Kolkata, July 1: A special CBI court in Kolkata has completed the process of framing charges against 19 individuals in the murder case of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar. This incident occurred during the violence following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. Among the accused are former Trinamool Congress MLA Paresh Paul and former Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor Swapan Samaddar.
CBI officials have interrogated both the former MLA and the ex-councillor multiple times regarding the case. Abhijit Sarkar, a BJP worker from the Kankurgachhi area in North Kolkata, was allegedly brutally murdered by Trinamool Congress activists after the election results were announced. His family claims he was severely tortured and killed.
Based on the family’s complaint, the Narkeldanga police station initiated a preliminary investigation and filed a charge sheet against 15 individuals. Subsequently, the Calcutta High Court ordered the CBI to take over the investigation. The CBI filed a supplementary charge sheet, naming a total of 20 accused. The then-in-charge of Kankurgachhi police station and a female sub-inspector were also arrested in connection with the case.
During the bail hearing, the court raised concerns about how society would function if those meant to protect citizens turned into perpetrators. The family of the deceased BJP worker expressed frustration over the pace of the CBI’s investigation.
Following the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that no individual involved in the violence after the 2021 elections would be spared.
