Guwahati, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : The family of Ramanuj Goswami, who was accused of the brutal murder of his wife Riya Talukdar, has refused to accept his body, claiming he was killed in a police encounter. They have announced plans to pursue legal action regarding his death.
Tarun Goswami, Ramanuj’s father, stated that the family will not travel to Guwahati to collect the body and will not contact the police for its release. He accused the police of conducting an “encounter” and expressed the family’s intention to seek justice through the courts.
“We will not be claiming his body. My son has been killed in an encounter. Everything is over now,” Tarun Goswami said. He emphasized that the family intends to bring this matter to public attention and pursue justice through legal channels.
The family plans to approach the Guwahati High Court and may escalate the situation to the Supreme Court if necessary, particularly concerning the circumstances surrounding Ramanuj’s death while in police custody.
Tarun Goswami also urged the public and media to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time as they prepare to take legal steps.
Meanwhile, officials at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) reported that when Ramanuj was brought in by police, there were no visible gunshot wounds on his body. The police explained that he died after jumping from a vehicle near the Narakasur hills while being taken for a blood test early Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 3 AM when Ramanuj was being transported from the Hatigaon area to GMCH. According to police, he attempted to escape custody, leading to a fatal fall.
Authorities clarified that he was not shot and that his death resulted from injuries sustained in the fall. Upon arrival at GMCH, he was declared dead. Debjit Chaudhary, the superintendent of GMCH, confirmed that Ramanuj was brought in as a victim of a road accident at 3:41 AM.
Chaudhary stated that initial tests, including an ECG, were conducted as per protocol, and further details would be available after a comprehensive post-mortem examination.
Initial investigations revealed no signs of gunshot wounds on Ramanuj’s body, contradicting earlier reports and claims circulating on social media that he had died from police gunfire.
Chaudhary noted that Ramanuj had several tattoos, although the inscriptions were not clearly legible. The body has since been moved to GMCH’s morgue for post-mortem.
Ramanuj was arrested in connection with the murder of his 25-year-old wife, Riya Talukdar, whose body was discovered in their home in the Basishthapur area of Guwahati earlier this month. Police alleged that Riya was killed following an argument, after which Ramanuj decapitated her and stored her head in a refrigerator.
The case came to light when neighbors reported a foul odor emanating from the apartment. While in custody, Ramanuj made contradictory statements, at one point claiming he felt “no remorse” and threatening to kill the man he referred to as his wife’s “sugar daddy.” Later, he expressed regret, stating that no one should repeat his actions.
