Excitement Grows in Samba as Third Bridge Over Basantar River Opens

Samba, March 15: The third bridge over the Basantar River in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district has officially opened for vehicle traffic. This new infrastructure is expected to significantly improve traffic management in the area.

Local residents express optimism that the bridge will not only reduce accidents but also provide much-needed relief for daily commuters. Previously, traffic jams around Sidco Chowk and nearby areas were common, often lasting for hours and negatively impacting both the public and commercial activities. With the bridge now operational, a reduction in traffic congestion is anticipated, making travel much easier.

According to officials, several key projects have been completed with a focus on enhancing safety on National Highway-44 and improving passenger facilities. Approximately ₹171.25 crores have been invested in these initiatives. Projects include addressing the ‘black spot’ between Sidco Chowk and Gole Mela-Sangur, constructing a Lower Vehicular Underpass (LVUP) along the service road in Samba, and developing modern roadside facilities in Jhajjar Kotli, Qazigund, and Marhama.

Residents are thrilled with the project’s completion and have expressed gratitude to the government and relevant agencies. A local resident remarked that the construction of the third bridge has brought significant relief to the people of Samba. He noted that the area had become a hotspot for accidents in recent months, with Sidco Chowk identified as one of the two main ‘black spots.’ He also mentioned that the National Highway Authority took this issue seriously and acted accordingly.

Another resident, Vikas Dongra, shared his happiness about the bridge’s completion, stating that the demand for a bridge in this area had been long-standing. He highlighted that traffic jams used to last for hours, causing considerable inconvenience for travelers. Furthermore, he noted that road accidents occurred almost every other day. With the bridge now open for use, these issues are expected to diminish, allowing for safer and more convenient travel for the community.
