Jharkhand High Court Criticizes Police Over Missing Girl Case in Bokaro

Ranchi, March 19: The Jharkhand High Court has taken a strong stance regarding the police’s handling of the case of an 18-year-old girl missing from Bokaro. During a hearing on a habeas corpus petition filed by the girl’s mother, the bench led by Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad raised serious questions about the pace of the investigation and the role of the police. The court asked the Bokaro Superintendent of Police why the case should not be handed over to the CBI.

The court emphasized that negligence in such cases is unacceptable. The bench expressed its dissatisfaction with the delays in the investigation and the lack of substantial progress reported by the Bokaro SP. The petitioner’s lawyer, Vincent Rohit Marki, informed the court that the girl has been missing since July 31, 2025, and a case (number 147/2025) has been registered at the Pindrajora police station in Bokaro.

During the investigation, a call was received on December 11, 2025, on the family’s mobile phone, indicating that the girl was in Pune. The police apprehended the caller, who claimed that the girl was with a friend in Pune.

Surprisingly, while the police were escorting the suspect by train to Pune, he managed to escape, leaving the police empty-handed. During the hearing, the Bokaro SP, who appeared virtually, informed the court that raids have been conducted in Pune and surrounding areas in search of the girl. The police have also detained another suspect and are preparing to conduct a narco test to gather more information.

However, the bench did not seem satisfied with these explanations. Citing a previous case from 2020, the court reminded the police of a similar incident in Bokaro where a girl went missing and was later found murdered after a year. The court stressed the need for the police to exhibit greater sensitivity and urgency in handling such cases.
