Qatar Criticizes Irans Maritime Threats at International Maritime Organization Meeting

New Delhi, March 19: Qatar has strongly criticized Iran for its attacks and threats against maritime shipping and infrastructure, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, labeling them as violations of international law.

During the 36th extraordinary session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, Qatar’s ambassador to the UK and permanent representative to the IMO, Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al Thani, addressed the assembly.

This session focused on open aggression against Gulf countries and its implications for maritime navigation, including the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Al Thani condemned Iran’s threats and attacks on commercial shipping and maritime infrastructure in the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that these actions clearly violate international law and the principles of freedom of navigation.

He reiterated the condemnation of attacks on Qatar and the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), as well as Jordan’s Hashemite Kingdom. He stated that such actions infringe upon state sovereignty and violate the principles of the United Nations Charter.

The ambassador welcomed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, which condemned these attacks. He emphasized the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and adhering to international law.

Al Thani noted that these attacks directly threaten maritime security, endanger the lives of innocent sailors, and jeopardize the stability of one of the world’s most crucial maritime routes. He warned that this could have serious repercussions on global trade, supply chains, and energy security.

He further stressed the need to ensure the safety of sailors and protect international maritime security and freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz. He rejected any actions or threats that obstruct maritime routes and reaffirmed Qatar’s support for the efforts of the International Maritime Organization and its member states to enhance maritime safety and security.
