Indian Citizens Returning Home via Armenia and Azerbaijan: MEA Reports

New Delhi, March 19: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Thursday that approximately 882 Indian citizens, including students, businesspeople, and pilgrims stranded in Iran, are returning home through Azerbaijan and Armenia. Many have already arrived. The MEA also condemned recent attacks on energy facilities in Gulf countries.

During a weekly media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “Many individuals did not register with the embassy. Therefore, we estimated that there were around 9,000 people. A significant number of students returned before the conflict began. Currently, about 882 Indian citizens, including students and business travelers, are in the process of returning via Azerbaijan and Armenia. Some have already arrived.”

He further noted, “Out of the 284 pilgrims who traveled there, 280 have returned; they came via Armenia. Three or four remain, and they are expected to arrive in a day or two.”

Jaiswal reported that 772 individuals crossed the Iranian land border into Armenia to return home, while activities along the Azerbaijan route are slower, with some of the 110 Indian citizens still returning, while others have already made it back to India.

Last week, discussing the assistance provided to Indian citizens in Iran, Jaiswal mentioned that many have returned home, and support continues for those planning to return.

The ministry urged Indian citizens wishing to leave Iran to follow the advice issued by the Indian embassy in Tehran.

In response to questions regarding attacks on energy facilities in the Gulf region, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “India has previously called for avoiding targeting civilian infrastructure, including energy infrastructure, in this region. Recent attacks on energy facilities at various locations are extremely concerning and further destabilize an already uncertain global energy landscape. Such attacks are unacceptable and must cease.”
