New Delhi, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media platform X on Monday to share a Sanskrit verse. The mantra, taken from the 10th verse of Chapter 36 of the Shukla Yajurveda, focuses on prayers for the well-being and prosperity derived from the elements of nature: air, sun, and water.
In his post, Modi wrote, “Sham no vatah pavataam, sham na stapatu suryah. Sham nah kanikradad devah parjanyobhi varshatu.” Translated to Hindi, this means that may the air flow for our welfare, may the sun’s heat be beneficial, and may the divine Varuna shower us with nourishing rain.
This mantra is considered a sacred “peace mantra” from the Yajurveda, symbolizing the balance, welfare, and prosperity between nature, humanity, and the universe. The Yajurveda teaches the importance of rituals, sacrifices, and living in harmony with nature.
Rishis (sages) believed that human life is entirely dependent on nature—air, sun, and water. Pollution in the air, excessive sunlight, or natural disasters like droughts and floods can lead to catastrophic consequences for humanity. Thus, the prayer emphasizes the need for these natural elements to remain “beneficial” rather than destructive.
Since ancient Vedic times, life and agriculture have relied heavily on favorable weather conditions. Air is essential for pollination and pure breathing, while sunlight is crucial for photosynthesis, energy, and health. Rainfall at the right time enriches the earth, allowing crops to flourish. This mantra seeks to ensure that these three conditions remain favorable for humanity, preventing famine or scarcity.
