
Shimla, May 9: The second day of the nomination process for the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) elections in Himachal Pradesh saw remarkable enthusiasm. On Friday, more than 25,000 candidates submitted their nomination papers across the state.
According to a press release from Surjeet Singh Rathore, Secretary of the State Election Commission, a total of 25,671 nomination papers were filed on May 8 for various positions in the panchayats, Block Development Committees (BDC), and District Councils.
Kangra district led the way with the highest number of nominations, where 5,989 candidates registered. Following Kangra, Mandi recorded 4,180 nominations, while Shimla and Chamba saw 2,675 and 2,581 nominations, respectively.
Other districts included Una with 1,941 nominations, Sirmaur with 1,797, Hamirpur with 1,548, Solan with 1,543, Kullu with 1,504, and Bilaspur with 1,281 nominations. In the tribal districts, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti reported 423 and 209 nominations, respectively.
The Election Commission announced that candidates can continue to submit their nomination papers until May 11. The verification of these papers will take place on May 12 at 10 AM by the respective returning officers and assistant returning officers. The last date for withdrawing nominations is set for May 15, after which election symbols will be allocated.
Voting for the Panchayati Raj elections will occur in three phases on May 26, 28, and 30. Voting will take place from 7 AM to 3 PM using ballot papers and ballot boxes.
Additionally, the verification of nomination papers for the Municipal Council of Rohru and the Municipal Panchayat of Narkanda was completed on Friday. According to the commission, 22 nominations were filed in Rohru and 16 in Narkanda, with no papers rejected.
