New Delhi, July 22: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has declared that he will end his hunger strike if the government assures that no force will be used against students and that no FIRs will be filed against them. He made this announcement in a video message from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Wednesday.
In the video, Wangchuk stated, “I am still alive; today marks the 25th day of my hunger strike. I have lost nearly 11 kilograms and my muscle mass has decreased significantly, but I am okay. I was transferred from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta in Gurugram last night.”
Wangchuk praised the students protesting in Delhi, commending their peaceful behavior. He noted, “I want to appreciate all the students who have behaved in an extremely peaceful manner. They endured police brutality without retaliating. Despite provocations and attempts by certain elements to incite violence, they maintained their composure. It melted my heart to see this.”
He explained that the brutal attacks on students prompted him to continue his hunger strike. Several leaders, including ministers and MPs, have approached him, urging him to end his strike. He mentioned that around 65 MPs have signed a petition requesting him to conclude his hunger strike and return to serving the nation. “I also wish to do so, as my work is very important to me,” he added.
Wangchuk further appealed to the government not to use force against children and to refrain from filing such charges and FIRs that could lead to harassment through police or other means. “I need assurance on this matter. If I receive this assurance soon, I will honor the requests of all of you and the leaders present here and end my hunger strike today. However, if no such assurance is provided, unfortunately, I will have to continue my strike.”
