West Bengal Government to Present CAG Report on July 25, Says Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata, July 22: The West Bengal government will present the report from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) regarding the state’s income and expenditure in the assembly on July 25. This date coincides with the last day of the ongoing extended budget session.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari made this announcement while addressing the assembly on Wednesday afternoon. He was responding to discussions regarding the budget allocation for the state’s Home Department.

The announcement about the CAG report was initially made by the new state finance minister, Swapan Dasgupta, during his presentation of the budget proposal for the fiscal year 2026-27 last month.

Following the announcement, Chief Minister Adhikari stated that the report will raise questions about accountability alongside development. He emphasized that no matter how prominent a leader may be, if they are found involved in corruption, an investigation will certainly follow.

During his address, Chief Minister Adhikari mentioned that there will be discussions on the CAG report in the next session of the assembly, and decisions will be made based on its findings.

He asserted that the CAG report will expose corruption across all sectors. Whether it involves the Chief Minister, ministers, or any major leader, none will escape scrutiny. The state government will recommend the governor to grant permission for filing FIRs against ministers involved in corruption.

Referring to alleged corruption in relief efforts following the Amphan cyclone in 2020, the Chief Minister noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had allocated ₹3,750 crores in two installments for Amphan relief.

He claimed that there was significant corruption in the relief efforts. A public interest litigation had also been filed in the Calcutta High Court regarding this issue. A special investigation by the CAG was conducted in light of the corruption allegations. However, the findings of this investigation were neither made public nor presented in the assembly. The report recommended legal action against the accused, yet no action has been taken.
