Coimbatore, June 13: The Nilgiri district administration has intensified monitoring at key checkpoints along the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border following reports of a suspected Nipah virus case in the neighboring Kozhikode district. Officials have implemented precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the infection into Tamil Nadu.
District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneru stated that health department personnel have been deployed at all major border checkpoints, including Thaloor, Naduguni, Nambiyarkunnu, Soladi, and Pattavayal.
Travelers and tourists arriving from Kerala are being screened for symptoms associated with the Nipah virus, while officials maintain a close watch on the situation.
Increased vigilance comes after initial reports from Kerala confirmed a case of the virus in Kozhikode. Although no threats have been confirmed in Tamil Nadu, the district administration has taken precautionary steps due to heavy interstate movement.
Officials noted that many residents of bordering villages frequently travel to Kerala for work and business, leading to regular cross-border movement.
Considering these factors, health authorities have ramped up monitoring efforts beyond the checkpoints, focusing particularly on areas with large populations of migrant workers.
Necessary health checks are being conducted, and surveillance has been heightened in these locations.
As part of preparedness measures, government hospitals, primary health centers, community health centers, and private hospitals across the district have been instructed to remain alert.
Medical institutions have been directed to promptly report any suspected symptoms related to Nipah to the health department for swift intervention.
The administration has also urged visitors arriving from Kerala to seek medical assistance voluntarily if they exhibit symptoms such as fever, respiratory illness, or other health issues related to the virus.
Officials emphasized the importance of timely reporting and treatment to prevent any potential infections.
Collector Tanneru stressed that these measures are purely precautionary and urged the public not to panic. She mentioned that the district administration is collaborating with health officials and continuously reviewing developments in Kerala.
With enhanced screening, hospital preparedness, and ground-level monitoring in place, officials expressed confidence that the district is fully equipped to handle any emergency situation.
They reiterated that there is currently no cause for concern among residents, and monitoring will continue as a precautionary measure.
