Kolkata, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : A fierce fire erupted on Sunday at the CESC Limited distribution office located in Panihati, North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. As of now, there have been no reports of injuries.
The blaze quickly escalated, engulfing nearby shanties and overwhelming initial attempts by local residents to extinguish the flames. The situation prompted immediate notification of the state fire department, which dispatched four fire engines to the scene to combat the fire. Shortly after, five additional fire trucks arrived, bringing the total to nine engaged in firefighting efforts.
A state fire department official at the scene reported, “The fire is quite severe. We have requested more fire engines, which we expect to arrive soon. Our current objective is to contain the fire within the building and prevent it from spreading to nearby shanties and structures.”
Adjacent to the distribution office is a residential area, and firefighters are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the flames do not reach those homes. The fire department has also alerted residents of the nearby slum about the ongoing situation.
In addition to water, firefighters are utilizing foam to help extinguish the blaze. Officials are optimistic that they will gain control of the fire soon.
The fire has disrupted traffic along the busy Barrackpore Trunk Road (BT Road) due to the incident. Police are also monitoring the area closely. The cause of the fire remains unclear, but preliminary assessments by the fire department suggest that a transformer within the CESC building may have exploded, igniting the flames.
