New Delhi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima on September 13 in New Delhi, during the 18th BRICS Summit. The two leaders engaged in discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including trade, energy, clean technology, fertilizers, and defense.
In a post on the social media platform X, Modi expressed his pleasure in meeting Shettima, highlighting their talks on collaboration in trade, electricity, clean energy, fertilizers, and defense. They also reviewed partnerships in health, capacity building, technology, and other areas.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that both leaders evaluated the multidimensional relationship between India and Nigeria, expressing satisfaction with the ongoing progress in various fields. Key topics of discussion included trade and investment, defense and security, energy partnerships, agriculture, health, and digital technology. They reiterated their commitment to strengthening the India-Nigeria strategic partnership.
Modi and Shettima also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, including the priorities and concerns of the Global South. The Ministry emphasized the importance of collaborating on multilateral platforms to promote a more representative, inclusive, and multipolar international order.
Modi underscored India’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its partnership with Nigeria and deepening its engagement with Africa. Shettima acknowledged India’s development experience and its contributions to capacity building and economic growth in Nigeria.
According to the Ministry, both nations reaffirmed their shared commitment to establishing a robust and forward-looking partnership that contributes to peace, prosperity, and development in both countries and the broader Global South.
India hosted the 18th BRICS Summit in 2026 at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, with leaders from member countries, partner nations, and invited outreach countries in attendance. The BRICS group includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates, while its partner nations comprise Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
