Englands Coach Tuchel Downplays World Cup 2026 Hopes

New York, June 10: England’s head football coach, Thomas Tuchel, believes that his team is not the strongest contender to win the FIFA World Cup 2026. He emphasized that England must prove itself in major tournaments, as the team has not secured a significant international title in the last six decades.

According to a report by Xinhua, Tuchel made these remarks ahead of England’s final warm-up match against Costa Rica in Orlando. Previously, England had narrowly defeated New Zealand 1-0, but their performance was not particularly impressive. When asked by reporters if England is among the top contenders for the World Cup, Tuchel firmly stated that they are not.

He noted that many teams worldwide have won major tournaments in recent years and have better records than England. Tuchel acknowledged that while the team dreams big and aims for the title, they currently see themselves as challengers. He stressed that the players are focused on hard work, preparation, and consistent improvement. Simply being labeled as a contender does not guarantee a team will become champions.

Tuchel also shared his thoughts on team leadership, confirming that Harry Kane remains the captain, with Declan Rice appointed as vice-captain. He mentioned that this decision was made some time ago, as Rice effectively manages the team on the field.

Praising Rice, Tuchel highlighted his exceptional football knowledge, understanding of game pace, strategy, and team balance. Rice is currently regarded as one of the best midfielders in Europe and is in excellent form.

The coach noted that the atmosphere in England’s camp is calm and positive. However, as the tournament approaches, it is natural for pressure to mount on the players. He stated that the team is preparing both mentally and physically. England will kick off their World Cup campaign on June 17 against Croatia, a match that will attract the attention of football fans worldwide.
