New Delhi, June 14: The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, T.S. Sandhu, has directed all police stations to conduct weekly public hearings starting June 20. This initiative aims to address complaints and assist with issues related to police operations and public safety, as confirmed by an official on Sunday.
According to an official statement, these public hearings, termed ‘Thana Divas – Jan Sunwai’, will take place every Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM at all police stations. The goal is to enhance police accessibility and streamline police services.
A circular issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha outlined the guidelines for this weekly program. It stated, “This will be an open platform for the public to voice their complaints, suggestions, requests for assistance, or concerns related to police operations and public safety.”
The initiative aims to establish a systematic process for resolving public complaints, improve coordination between the police and the community, and enhance accountability at all levels.
The statement emphasized the creation of an open forum under this initiative to resolve complaints, gather suggestions, and swiftly address local public safety issues.
The Lieutenant Governor believes that community-centered, accessible, and dialogue-based policing is the most effective way to address public grievances and strengthen trust in law enforcement agencies.
The guidelines issued by Commissioner Golcha mandate that all supervisory officers, from Special Commissioner to Assistant Commissioner levels, must participate in the public hearings on a rotating basis. Each district will prepare a schedule for this purpose.
The statement noted, “To ensure prompt resolution of complaints and build public trust in the grievance redressal system, the presence of senior officials will be ensured.”
The Commissioner also instructed that each police station must create a designated information sheet to record complaints received during the public hearings.
Emphasizing timely action, Golcha stated that complaints requiring investigation, verification, or ground action should be assigned immediately and resolved within an appropriate timeframe.
He added that to ensure timely resolution of pending complaints, the relevant ACP and DCP will conduct regular reviews. The police commissioner also directed all SHOs to ensure proper seating arrangements, assistance desks, and a citizen-friendly environment during ‘Thana Divas – Jan Sunwai’.
In the circular, the commissioner stated, “Any complainant attending the public hearing will be heard, regardless of whether their complaint is registered on the Integrated Complaint Management System (ICMS). Complaints received during the public hearing will be accepted and later uploaded to the ICMS.”
