
London, June 5: The first day of the Test match between England and New Zealand was dominated by bowlers. A total of 16 wickets fell at Lord’s on this opening day. England’s entire team was bowled out for just 140 runs in their first innings. By the end of the day, New Zealand had lost 6 wickets for only 61 runs.
After restricting England to a low score, New Zealand’s batting did not start well. Captain Tom Latham managed only 3 runs. Devon Conway was dismissed by Ollie Robinson for just 1 run. Kane Williamson was out without scoring, and Rachin Ravindra also fell to Robinson for a duck.
Daryl Mitchell could only score 12 runs, while Tom Blundell faced 21 balls but only managed 4 runs. By day’s end, Glenn Phillips was batting on 31 and Nathan Smith on 6, leaving New Zealand still 79 runs behind England’s score. Robinson was the standout bowler, taking 4 wickets for just 10 runs. Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue each claimed one wicket.
Earlier, England’s batsmen struggled on their home ground. The innings got off to a poor start, with Ben Duckett out for 19 runs and Emilio Gay scoring just 8. Jacob Bethel fell for 6 runs, becoming the victim of William O’Rourke. Joe Root contributed only 1 run. However, Harry Brook showcased impressive batting, scoring 56 runs off 71 balls with 10 boundaries, though he lacked support from the other batsmen.
Captain Ben Stokes was clean bowled by Kyle Jamieson for 12 runs. Gus Atkinson (4 runs) and Ollie Robinson (1 run) also failed with the bat. Josh Tongue remained not out at 10, while Shoaib Bashir added 14 runs. In New Zealand’s bowling attack, Kyle Jamieson shone with 5 wickets for 62 runs, while Nathan Smith took 3 wickets and O’Rourke claimed 2.
