Ellyse Perry May Play in Womens T20 World Cup Final Despite Injury Concerns

New Delhi, July 2: Ellyse Perry, the star all-rounder of the Australian women’s cricket team, may participate in the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, despite not being fully fit. The team’s head coach stated on Thursday that a final decision regarding Perry’s fitness will be made before the match.

Perry sustained an injury during the semi-final against the West Indies, where she had to retire hurt due to a thigh muscle issue. Head coach Shelley Nitschke mentioned that the team has not practiced since the semi-final, so there are no new updates on her condition.

When asked if Perry could still play in the final despite her injury, Nitschke replied, “Yes, it’s possible. Perry wants to contribute to the team in any capacity, whether it’s fielding, batting, or running between the wickets. Player availability is viewed differently in crucial matches like the World Cup final.”

The coach also praised young fast bowler Lucy Hamilton. Although Hamilton has yet to take a wicket in the tournament, she has maintained an impressive economy rate of 4.45 runs per over over 11 overs.

Nitschke noted that Hamilton’s bowling during the powerplay against India was particularly effective, and she remained composed under pressure in the semi-final, controlling the opposition batsmen. While she may not have taken wickets, she created several crucial opportunities.

The Australian women’s team became T20 World Cup champions in 2023 by defeating South Africa. However, they have not won any ICC World Cup since then. Australia did not reach the finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup or the 2025 ODI World Cup. This time, they are eager to reclaim the championship. The final will see Australia face the winner of the semi-final between England and South Africa.
