Gold Coast: The legendary Australian cricketer Sir Don Bradman’s ‘Baggy Green Cap’ was sold for 4,60,000 Australian dollars (approximately ₹2.92 crore) in an auction held on Monday at Gold Coast. The buyer of this historic cap has chosen to remain anonymous.
According to Australian media reports, the cap will be displayed in a museum, allowing cricket enthusiasts to witness one of the sport’s most valuable memorabilia.
Sir Don Bradman wore this cap during the 1947-48 Test series against India. He gifted the cap to Indian cricketer Sriranga Vasudev Sohoni, adding significant sentimental and historical value to the item.
The Sohoni family carefully preserved the cap for over seven decades, passing it down through three generations. The inside of the cap bears the handwritten names of ‘DG Bradman’ and ‘SW Sohoni’, further authenticating its provenance and appeal.
Despite its age, the cap remains in excellent condition. This has greatly contributed to its high price, surpassing the 3,11,000 Australian dollars fetched by another Bradman cap sold in 2024. That earlier cap showed clear signs of wear, fading, and insect damage.
Sir Don Bradman’s cricket legacy is unparalleled. In his 52 Test matches, he finished with an astonishing batting average of 99.94, scoring 29 centuries including 19 in Ashes contests. He also recorded 12 double centuries throughout his career.
In his final Test innings at The Oval in 1948, Bradman needed just four runs to retire with a perfect 100-plus batting average but was dismissed for a duck, concluding his career with the iconic 99.94 average. Bradman passed away in 2001 at the age of 92, yet remains deeply cherished by Australian cricket fans worldwide.
