Chennai, June 21: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is set to undergo significant organizational changes following its disappointing performance in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. As the current session of the Assembly concludes, the party aims to strengthen its grassroots network and enhance its electoral machinery.
According to party sources, the restructuring will primarily focus on Chennai and its surrounding districts, where the DMK faced substantial losses. The objective of this initiative is to improve coordination among party units, increase outreach to voters, and prepare the organization for upcoming local body elections.
Under the proposed changes, senior leaders from Chennai, including former minister P.K. Sekar Babu, Ma. Subramanian, and T.M. Anbarasan, are expected to be assigned responsibility for larger organizational units covering multiple Assembly constituencies. This move aims to streamline operations and ensure better oversight of party activities at the grassroots level.
Insiders reveal that the current organizational structure in Chennai differs significantly from that in several other districts. While many districts outside Chennai are organized around units covering two Assembly constituencies, the capital has several relatively smaller organizational districts.
The proposed restructuring may assign senior leaders in Chennai to clusters of four Assembly constituencies, facilitating improved coordination and stronger election management. Currently, some district secretaries and senior officials in Chennai already oversee five or six Assembly constituencies. The party leadership is now considering a revised framework that will clearly define responsibilities and enhance organizational efficiency.
This restructuring proposal follows a comprehensive review initiated by DMK President M.K. Stalin after the election results. Committees appointed by the party leadership conducted a statewide assessment to identify the reasons behind the electoral defeat. Reports indicate that they analyzed challenges at the constituency level, shortcomings in campaigning, organizational weaknesses, and shifting voter sentiments.
Sources suggest that the results highlighted the need for a robust system at the booth and constituency levels, particularly in urban areas where the party’s performance was poor. Chennai has emerged as one of the most concerning areas for the DMK, as the party faced several significant defeats here, including Stalin’s loss in the Kolathur constituency, long considered a stronghold.
Based on the recommendations from the review committees, it is anticipated that DMK leadership will implement the restructuring immediately after the Assembly session concludes, with the aim of reinforcing the party organization and preparing for future elections.
