Congress Leader Accuses Election Commission Head of Serving Government Interests
Congress leader Bhai Jagatap calls for legal action against Election Commission head for alleged government bias in Maharashtra elections.

Mumbai, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Congress leader Bhai Jagatap has intensified political tensions in Maharashtra, accusing the Chief of the Election Commission, Gyanesh Kumar, of acting in the government’s interest. His remarks come amid controversy over the deletion of names of 2.52 million voters under the State Identification Registry (SIR).
Jagatap criticized Kumar’s actions, demanding legal accountability for what he termed as a betrayal of democratic principles. He expressed his views on recent comments made by Sanjay Raut of the Uddhav faction of Shiv Sena, emphasizing the sanctity of the Parliament as a temple for the 1.4 billion citizens of India. He acknowledged the ongoing issues within Parliament, stating that the Prime Minister‘s absence and the lack of legislative activity undermine its dignity.
On the topic of the Prime Minister’s recent deliberations regarding governance, Jagatap questioned the purpose of such discussions if they do not contribute to preserving democracy.
He expressed disappointment with the Election Commission, stating it should feel ashamed of its recent actions. He claimed that the Chief Election Commissioner has disregarded the warnings from fellow commissioners against proceeding with the SIR, which he believes is undemocratic.
Jagatap insisted that all elections conducted under SIR should be annulled, arguing that they do not align with democratic frameworks. He highlighted that the removal of nearly 25-27% of voters in Maharashtra, who have consistently participated in elections, is unjust.
He reiterated his stance that the current government was formed through electoral malpractice, asserting that the Election Commission has played a significant role in this deception. Jagatap has previously suggested that Gyanesh Kumar operates more like a government puppet than an impartial election overseer, insinuating that his actions are aimed at pleasing the ruling party for post-retirement opportunities.
