Geneva, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : India addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on September 24, 2026, voicing serious concerns regarding the deteriorating situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Indian diplomat Kshitij Tyagi emphasized the alarming reports of civilian deaths and the arrest of students in Islamabad and Rawalpindi since June.
Tyagi urged Pakistan to focus on addressing its economic challenges rather than engaging in territorial disputes or fostering terrorism. He stated, “Pakistan’s approach will not aid in resolving the economic issues facing the country. By prioritizing development, rather than occupying others’ territories or spreading terror, Pakistan could better serve its people. Neither this behavior nor its theatrics in this council will help in repaying its economic loans.”
Highlighting the grim situation in PoK, Tyagi referred to reports of civilian casualties and restrictions on food and medicine. He asserted, “If any delegation in this room meets all the criteria for investigation by this council, it is Pakistan.”
He further pointed out that India is home to one of the largest Muslim populations in the world, where minorities participate in voting, law-making, and hold positions in the Supreme Court and various institutions.
Tyagi criticized Pakistan for raising the Kashmir issue after decades of sponsoring cross-border terrorism. “This council does not need clarification from Pakistan. This became evident in 1990 when Kashmiri Pandits were driven from their homes by terrorists armed, trained, and sent across the border by Pakistan. These terrorists have since targeted Kashmiris of all faiths, many of whom are Muslims. The country that sponsored them now seeks investigation from this council. This irony will not go unnoticed,” he remarked.
His comments came in response to Pakistan’s renewed focus on Kashmir during the council session. India reiterated its stance, declaring, “Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inseparable part of India and always will be.”
