Concerns Raised Over Voter List Purges by Congress Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury

New Delhi, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a prominent Congress leader, has voiced serious concerns regarding the Election Commission‘s Special Intensive Review (SIR) process amid ongoing controversy. He accused the Commission of removing a significant number of names from voter lists, thereby undermining the credibility of the electoral process.

Chowdhury urged for a review of election results in areas where elections have already taken place following the SIR. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “What greater threat to democracy could there be than allegations of manipulation of the voter list against the Election Commission?” He noted that millions of names have been removed, while others have been newly added, raising doubts about the overall integrity of the election process.

In his remarks, Chowdhury referenced the ongoing legal battles in the Supreme Court and Calcutta High Court regarding the SIR. He pointed out that many individuals are required to appear before tribunals, yet there is a lack of sufficient tribunal and judicial officers to handle the cases. He highlighted that, according to the Election Commission’s data, numerous names have been removed, but only a limited number of cases have been resolved.

Chowdhury claimed that over 700,000 cases are pending in his district alone, with more than 3.4 million cases across West Bengal awaiting tribunal decisions, while only 514 cases have been adjudicated so far. He also mentioned Rahul Gandhi’s inquiries about the SIR and the voter list issues, asserting that statements emerging from within the Election Commission have sparked new debates on this matter.

He argued that if local officials such as Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), District Election Officers (DEOs), and Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) lacked sufficient authority and decisions were controlled at the central level, then the fairness of the voter list preparation process must be scrutinized.

Chowdhury called for an independent and thorough investigation into the entire matter, insisting that all facts related to the SIR should be disclosed to address the questions surrounding the voter list and electoral process.
