Chennai, May 10: A petition filed by former DMK minister K.R. Periyakaruppan will be heard in the Madras High Court on Sunday. The petition seeks to prevent TVK candidate Srinivasa Setupati from taking the oath of office as a legislator.
In the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Periyakaruppan contested from the Tiruppattur constituency in Sivagangai district. He lost to his rival, TVK’s Srinivasa Setupati, by a mere one vote, with Setupati receiving 83,365 votes compared to Periyakaruppan’s 83,364.
Following this narrow defeat, Periyakaruppan approached the court, requesting a recount of the votes and an interim order to stop Setupati from assuming office.
The petition also calls for the retrieval and secure storage of postal ballots allegedly sent from the Tiruppattur constituency in Sivagangai district. Additionally, it requests the Election Commission of India to include these postal ballots in the counting process and to present video records related to the recount verification in court.
This petition has been listed for immediate hearing before a vacation bench. Justices L. Victoria Gowri and N. Senthilkumar will hear the case at approximately 10:30 AM on Sunday.
Meanwhile, a new government is set to be formed in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. TVK leader Vijay will take the oath of office as Chief Minister at 10 AM in Chennai.
