
Islamabad, June 18: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Thursday between the United States and Iran, following months of conflict. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif hailed it as a historic ‘Islamabad Agreement’ and announced that the Hormuz Strait would be opened immediately.
In a post on social media platform X, PM Shahbaz expressed his delight, stating, “I am pleased to announce that the historic ‘Islamabad Agreement’ between the United States and Iran has been signed today (Thursday). The presidents of both countries have signed this MoU, and I have also approved it as a mediator. The signing of this agreement demonstrates both parties’ commitment to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict.”
The Prime Minister indicated that the agreement would be implemented immediately. Under its terms, Iran will reopen the Hormuz Strait, while the United States will lift its naval blockade without delay.
PM Shahbaz congratulated the US President, commending his commitment to diplomacy and prioritizing peaceful solutions, which has once again helped end a conflict that could have had dangerous repercussions for the region and beyond.
He also praised Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. PM Shahbaz expressed respect for the Iranian negotiation team, which included Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Abbas Araghchi, and Eskandar Momeni. Their patience, dedication, and commitment were crucial in achieving this agreement.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the roles of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt in making this agreement successful. Additionally, he highlighted Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, whose tireless efforts, selfless dedication, and significant role were essential in facilitating this success and promoting peace and stability in the region. He hopes that this memorandum will serve as a lasting foundation for better understanding, mutual respect, and shared prosperity across the region.
