Chennai, March 18: The ruling DMK is set to finalize its seat-sharing arrangement with its left allies, CPI and CPI(M), on Wednesday, as negotiations are in the final stages. Indications suggest a continuation of the 2021 formula.
Sources within the DMK indicate that the party leadership favors allocating six seats each to both CPI and CPI(M), matching the number they contested in the previous assembly elections.
This decision is expected to follow consultations with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, with an official announcement likely to follow soon.
This development comes at a time when both left parties are pressuring for a slight increase in their seat allocations. Leaders from CPI and CPI(M) have requested at least one additional seat each, arguing that their organizational strength and electoral contributions warrant greater representation in the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA).
On Tuesday, CPI(M) leaders met with the DMK’s seat-sharing committee at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai to reiterate their demands. After the meeting, CPI(M) state secretary P. Shanmuugam stated that discussions were progressing in a positive and constructive manner.
He expressed hope that a mutually agreeable solution would emerge. Inside sources from the DMK revealed that there had been initial discussions about reducing the left parties’ quota to five seats each.
However, to maintain coalition stability and avoid conflicts before the elections, the leadership has shifted its stance and decided against this reduction.
Political analysts believe that the DMK aims to conclude coalition negotiations swiftly to focus on election campaign strategies and candidate selection. Maintaining the current seat-sharing arrangement could help uphold unity within the alliance while addressing competitive demands.
