District Administration Takes Action Following Vedanta Power Plant Boiler Accident

Raigarh, April 15: The district administration in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, has responded decisively to the severe boiler accident at Vedanta Power Limited in Singhitrai village, under the Dabha tehsil. Following directives from Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Collector and District Magistrate Amrit Vikas Topno has ordered a magistrate-level inquiry under Section 196 of the Indian National Disaster Management Code-2023. The responsibility for the investigation has been assigned to Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vinay Kumar Kashyap.

On April 14, 2026, a significant incident occurred in Boiler Unit-1 of the plant due to a technical failure in the joint of the water supply pipe connected to the steam pipe. A total of 34 workers were affected by this incident, resulting in the tragic deaths of 12 individuals. The other injured workers are currently receiving treatment at Fortis Jindal Hospital, Apex Hospital, and Balaji Metro Hospital in Raigarh.

The inquiry will clarify when, how, and under what circumstances the accident occurred. It will also verify the identities of the workers present at the site during the incident, as well as those who lost their lives or were injured. A detailed analysis of the causes leading to the accident will be conducted.

Additionally, the Assistant Director of Industrial Health and Safety (District Janjgir-Champa and Raigarh) will review inspections conducted at the plant from the start of operations until the accident occurred. The investigation will also assess whether any prior deficiencies were identified and what actions were taken in response.

The investigating officer has been instructed to determine whether the accident was caused by technical issues or human error, and to identify the individuals or entities responsible. Recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future will also be included in the report. The administration has mandated that the complete investigation and detailed report be submitted within 30 days.
