New Delhi, May 27: In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, digestive issues and sluggish metabolism have become common. Mayurasana, or the Peacock Pose, is considered highly beneficial for physical health. This yoga posture helps detoxify the body by eliminating harmful toxins.
The term ‘Mayurasana’ is derived from two words: ‘Mayur,’ meaning peacock, and ‘asana,’ meaning posture. This pose activates the Manipura chakra, instilling confidence and positive energy within the practitioner.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Mayurasana is an advanced balancing yoga posture where the entire body weight rests on the palms. It is known to stimulate the digestive organs, enhance digestive power, and strengthen muscles. The weight distribution primarily on the palms and shoulders fortifies the wrists, shoulders, legs, and overall body muscles.
Practicing Mayurasana daily improves body balance, increases concentration, and enhances mental stability. This pose is also believed to aid in detoxification, helping the body expel toxins and improving blood circulation. Additionally, it is beneficial for lung health.
To perform Mayurasana, start by sitting in Vajrasana. Place both palms on the ground with fingers pointing backward. Bend the elbows slightly and bring them close to the abdomen. Gradually shift your body weight onto your palms while extending your legs backward. Keep your head forward and strive to maintain balance. Initially, hold this position for a few seconds, gradually increasing the duration. However, beginners may find this pose challenging, so it is advisable to practice under the guidance of a yoga expert.
Pregnant women and individuals with high blood pressure, hernias, or ulcers should avoid this pose.
