Ujjain, August 30: On August 30, the Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal was held at the Mahakaleshwar Temple during the second day of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha. A large number of devotees gathered to witness this divine spectacle.
Early Sunday morning, after seeking blessings from Lord Veerabhadra, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As the devotees caught their first glimpse of Baba Mahakal following the divine adornment and Bhasma Aarti, the temple echoed with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and mantras.
With the opening of the temple gates, the water abhishekam of Lord Mahakal commenced amidst the chanting of mantras. The deity was bathed with Panchamrit, made from milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices. During the worship of Baba Mahakal, the first bell was rung, and Hari Om water was offered. After the camphor aarti, Baba donned a crown. The Bhasma Aarti was then performed with the accompaniment of jingles, drums, and conch shells. Baba Mahakal was adorned with bhang, trident, tripund, and fragrant flowers.
The temple priest conducted the Maha Aarti, and a significant number of devotees witnessed the Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal. Many devotees had queued since the previous night to have a glimpse of their beloved deity. It is customary for men to wear traditional dhoti-sola and women to wear sarees during the Bhasma Aarti.
According to tradition, the Bhasma Aarti is offered to Baba Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhada. It is believed that after the offering of Bhasma, Baba Mahakal reveals his form to the devotees. A large number of devotees travel to the holy city of Ujjain to participate in this sacred ritual.
