Delhi Government Sets Ambitious Green Action Plan to Plant Over 7 Million Trees

New Delhi, April 2: The Delhi government has announced an ambitious target under its Green Action Plan (GAP) for 2026-27, aiming to plant over 7 million trees, shrubs, and bamboo hedges. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa revealed this initiative on Wednesday, stating that 22 departments will collaborate to achieve this goal.

This revised target marks a significant increase compared to last year. The Forest and Wildlife Department has been designated as the nodal agency for this campaign, which will monitor progress through the GAP portal.

Minister Sirsa emphasized, “It is our collective responsibility to make Delhi greener. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, our government aims to enhance the green cover of the capital by planting more trees than last year. We are not just focused on pollution control; we want to rapidly increase Delhi’s greenery.”

He noted that this campaign is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative, “One Tree in the Name of Mother.” Last year, students, women’s groups, citizens, representatives, and dignitaries participated enthusiastically in large-scale planting activities. Various departments have been assigned specific targets under the revised plan.

The Forest Department has been tasked with planting over 2.7 million trees, while the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has a goal of 1 million, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) 500,000, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) 505,000, the Public Works Department (PWD) 300,000, the School Education Department 350,000, the Higher Education Department over 25,000, the Technical Education Department 41,000, NTPC 70,000, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) 60,000 trees.

Additionally, over 1.2 million plants will be distributed free to the public through the Forest Department, DPGS, and DMRC. The overall target is set at approximately 7,005,386 plants.

The government has adopted a multi-layer plantation strategy, incorporating large trees, shrubs, and ground cover. This approach aims to reduce pollution and improve environmental balance. All departments have been instructed to regularly update their progress on the GAP portal to ensure transparency.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa reiterated, “We are not just focused on planting trees but also on their care and survival. Our goal is for every plant to grow and enhance Delhi’s greenery.”
