IMD Issues Storm Warning for Manipur; Flood Risk in Kakching District

Imphal, March 28: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall across all 16 districts of Manipur over the next five days. This alert comes from the meteorological center located in Imphal.

Amid rising concerns, the Kakching district administration has urged residents to remain vigilant due to the increasing water levels in the Imphal and Sekmai rivers.

In a public advisory issued by District Magistrate Uppuluri Chaitanya, the potential flood threat in the low-lying areas of Kakching district has been highlighted. This is attributed to continuous rainfall and runoff from surrounding regions.

Residents in sensitive areas are advised to stay alert, avoid riverbanks, and be prepared for possible evacuations if conditions worsen.

Authorities and local officials have been instructed to ensure the readiness of relief measures, including the establishment of safe shelters and the deployment of emergency response teams.

Citizens are encouraged to closely monitor official updates and contact district control rooms in case of emergencies.

According to the IMD forecast, continuous rainfall is expected in various parts of the state and district over the next five days, starting Saturday. The IMD has predicted thunderstorms with lightning, strong winds of 30 to 40 km/h, and heavy rainfall for Sunday (March 29), prompting the issuance of an orange alert.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions to avoid loss of life and property.

As per the afternoon weather update released on March 28, there is a high likelihood of scattered rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the state. Significant weather activity is anticipated on March 29 and 30, which may lead to rainfall in several areas.

In the early stages of the forecast period, districts such as Imphal West, Imphal East, Senapati, Ukhrul, and Churachandpur are expected to receive relatively higher rainfall.

From March 31, a decrease in rainfall intensity is likely. However, scattered thunderstorms may still occur in several districts, with some areas in the valley, including Bishnupur and Thoubal, experiencing rainfall until April 3.
