New Delhi, April 25: In a significant move to enhance democratic participation, the Delhi Assembly has launched a ‘Weekly Youth Outreach Program’. This initiative, guided by Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, began with the first group of 75 students from Maharshi Valmiki College of Education, Geeta Colony, visiting the assembly.
Under this program, students from various universities and educational institutions will tour the Delhi Assembly every Saturday. This experience aims to provide them with firsthand knowledge of the legislative process and strengthen their understanding of democratic institutions.
During the visit, students were informed about the historical development of the Delhi Assembly. They learned that the current assembly building was constructed in 1912 and previously served as the site of the Central Legislative Assembly. The historical legacy of Vitthalbhai Patel was also highlighted, noting that since its re-establishment in 1993, the Delhi Assembly has functioned as a vital platform for democratic governance.
The program included a structured introductory session on legislative processes and institutional operations. A commemorative coffee table book titled ‘A Century Journey’ was presented, along with a documentary on the assembly’s institutional history narrated by Padma Bhushan awardee Anupam Kher. Additionally, students were given a guided tour of the assembly building, allowing them to gain direct experience of its operations.
Announcing the Youth Outreach Program, Speaker Vijender Gupta stated that this initiative aims to bridge the gap between citizens and democratic institutions. He emphasized that it provides young people with an opportunity to understand how laws are made and the fundamental principles of public life and democratic governance.
Gupta remarked that the strength of democracy relies on aware, informed, and responsible citizens. Continuous engagement with institutions, fostering a culture of participation, accountability, and respect for democratic processes is essential. He also noted that such initiatives play a crucial role in developing civic awareness among youth and reinforcing the foundations of a democratic society.
This program is part of a well-thought-out initiative by the Delhi Assembly Secretariat, aimed at increasing awareness of parliamentary processes and democratic institutions while continuously connecting students to public life and legislative activities.
