Defence Sector Gets ₹7.85 Lakh Crore in Union Budget 2026

New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for allocating ₹7.85 lakh crore to the defence sector in the Union Budget 2026. He described the budget as one that meets public expectations and sentiments.

In a statement, Rajnath Singh said, “I congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his guidance in preparing this excellent budget, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for presenting it. This budget fulfills the aspirations of the people and strengthens the Prime Minister’s vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat and a developed India, with appropriate provisions for the upliftment of all sections of society.”

The Defence Minister further expressed heartfelt thanks to the Prime Minister for the substantial allocation towards defence. “Following the historic success of Operation Sindhu, this budget reinforces our commitment to strengthening the nation’s defence system,” he added.

Rajnath Singh highlighted that ₹2.19 lakh crore has been earmarked for the capital expenditure of the armed forces this year. A significant focus of this budget is the modernisation of all three services, with ₹1.85 lakh crore allocated, marking an increase of nearly 24 percent compared to the previous financial year. This boost is expected to enhance India’s military capabilities further.

The budget also prioritises the welfare of ex-servicemen and their families. Under the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, the allocation has been increased by around 45 percent to ₹12,100 crore compared to the current year. According to the Defence Minister, this budget balances security, development, and self-reliance effectively.
