Thousands Gather for Grand Bhasma Aarti at Mahakal Temple

Ujjain, June 27: The Mahakaleshwar Temple witnessed a magnificent Bhasma Aarti on Saturday, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Jyestha Shukla Paksha Trayodashi. A large number of devotees gathered to witness this divine spectacle, lining up since late night for a glimpse of Baba Mahakal.

Early Saturday morning, after seeking the blessings of Lord Veerabhadra, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As the devotees caught their first sight of Baba Mahakal following the divine adornment and Bhasma Aarti, the temple resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and mantras.

With the opening of the temple gates, amidst the chanting of mantras, Baba Mahakal was bathed with Panchamrit, a sacred mixture made from milk, yogurt, ghee, sugar, and fruit juices. The deity was adorned with a silver crown and a Rudraksha necklace, presenting a regal appearance.

The temple priests conducted the grand Aarti, allowing a significant number of devotees to witness the Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal. Many had queued since the previous night to have darshan of their beloved deity.

Traditionally, the ashes from cremation grounds were offered to Mahakal, but now, the Bhasma is prepared using cow dung from the Kapila cow and medicinal herbs. During the Bhasma Aarti, men are required to wear traditional dhoti-sola, while women must wear sarees.

The Aarti of Baba Mahakal is renowned across the country and abroad, attracting not only the general public but also prominent personalities. To maintain order during the event, a large contingent of police personnel is deployed around the temple.
