Kathmandu, September 1: The death toll from last week’s devastating floods in Nepal has exceeded 1000, with bodies still being recovered along riverbanks.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reported on Tuesday that a total of 1003 bodies have been recovered so far. The highest number, 321, was found in the southern Chitwan district, followed by 216 in eastern Nawalparasi.
According to NDRRMA, 3,916 individuals remain missing, including 583 foreign nationals. Among the missing are members of the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police, as well as other government personnel.
The authority noted that 639 workers from various hydropower projects along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers are unaccounted for.
Government officials stated that search, rescue, and relief operations are ongoing in the affected districts. The NDRRMA reported that 279 people have been injured. Efforts to identify the deceased and gather information on the injured continue.
A total of 21,314 security personnel have been deployed for search, rescue, and relief operations, including 9,199 from the Nepal Army, 7,912 from Nepal Police, and 4,203 from the Armed Police Force.
The authority has indicated that unidentified bodies are being stored at 21 different locations for identification and proper management. So far, 11,884 individuals have been rescued. Search and rescue operations in flood-affected areas continue, with security agencies using helicopters and other resources to reach stranded individuals.
Meanwhile, the Nepal Army has stated that it is continuing search and rescue operations at various hydropower projects with the assistance of foreign experts. Joint rescue efforts are underway at sites including the Chilime Hydropower Project, Langtang Hydropower Project, Upper Trishuli-1, and Trishuli-3A.
According to the Nepal Army, 279 individuals were rescued alive during the initial rescue operations conducted immediately after the floods in the hydropower project areas. This includes two from Rasuwagadhi, 33 from Upper Trishuli-1, 221 from Upper Trishuli-3A, two from Upper Trishuli-3B, nine from Mailung, four from the Nuwakot Solar Power Project, three from the Trishuli Hydropower Project, and five from the Devghat Hydropower Project.
