Madrid, September 2: Midfielder Dani Ceballos has returned to Real Betis as one of the final deals on La Liga’s Deadline Day. This was confirmed on Wednesday morning. The 30-year-old is going back to the club where he began his career. After finishing his contract with Real Madrid, he has agreed to a three-year deal that runs until June 2029.
Ceballos made his debut for Betis in 2014 and played 98 La Liga matches for the club before joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2017. His career at Real Madrid has been a rollercoaster ride. Over nine years, he played 135 matches in La Liga but was rarely considered a first-choice player. He was also loaned to Arsenal for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.
With Betis qualifying for this season’s Champions League and strengthening the club’s financial position, Ceballos found an opportunity to return to the club he has always supported. Both he and Real Madrid agreed to terminate his contract to facilitate his return.
Ceballos ended his contract with Real Madrid this summer, as both parties reached a mutual agreement to part ways. Real Madrid’s website stated, “Real Madrid and Dani Ceballos have mutually agreed to end his tenure at the club.”
The website also noted that since arriving from Betis in 2017, Ceballos has played 215 matches. The club confirmed that the midfielder left this summer after both sides agreed to terminate his contract.
Despite playing over 200 matches for Real Madrid, Ceballos was seldom a regular starter. He spent much of the second half of last season in the stands due to a strained relationship with former coach Álvaro Arbeloa. Reports indicated that new coach José Mourinho informed the club that he did not require Ceballos for the upcoming season. Now, the 29-year-old is free to return to Betis on a free transfer, the club where he started his career.
