CPI(M) Calls Emergency Meeting Amid Seat Sharing Uncertainty with DMK for Tamil Nadu Elections

Chennai, March 21: As uncertainty looms over seat sharing in the DMK-led alliance for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has convened emergency meetings of its state committee and state executive committee.

The meetings were called following the announcement of the election schedule by the Election Commission, prompting intensified discussions among alliance partners.

Most parties in the DMK coalition have either finalized their seat-sharing agreements or are close to doing so. However, negotiations with CPI(M) have yet to yield any consensus, heightening confusion within the alliance.

According to party sources, CPI(M) leadership has engaged in three rounds of talks with the DMK. In the first two rounds, the Marxist party demanded more seats compared to the six it contested in the 2021 assembly elections. The party argued that its organizational strength and electoral contributions warrant a larger share this time.

In the third round of discussions, CPI(M) softened its stance, requesting at least the same number of seats it received in the previous election. Nevertheless, DMK leadership has proposed granting only five seats to the party, citing the need to accommodate new allies within the limited available seats.

CPI(M) has rejected this proposal, asserting that a reduction in seats is unacceptable. This issue has gained further significance as DMK successfully reached a separate seat-sharing agreement with the Communist Party of India (CPI), which has been allocated five seats—one less than what it received in the last assembly elections.

As negotiations reach a critical phase, CPI(M)’s emergency meetings are expected to focus on the party’s next strategy, including whether to continue discussions under the current terms or push for a revised agreement. Insiders suggest that the leadership may also assess the political implications of accepting fewer seats.
