United Nations, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar urged for enhanced solidarity among Global South nations to confront the challenges posed by crises affecting them. Speaking at a high-level meeting of like-minded countries convened by India, Jaishankar stated, “There has never been a more crucial time to demonstrate unity within the Global South.”
He emphasized that solidarity is essential for bringing about change and empowerment. “While the Global South is at the forefront of facing global crises, it lags in decision-making processes,” he noted. Jaishankar stressed the importance of the Global South being part of decision-making frameworks that address issues directly linked to their future.
He highlighted the need for improved economic cooperation among Global South countries to mitigate the impacts of multiple global crises. Jaishankar pointed out several critical areas where action is required due to the effects of crises or the dominance of developed nations.
He insisted that “points causing disruptions in supply chains, finance, or connectivity should not be justified,” and called for ensuring safety at sea under international law for commercial shipping and maritime workers.
Addressing food security, he urged the Global South to swiftly tackle challenges related to the supply of grains and fertilizers. He advocated for fair economic and trade practices that enhance production capabilities, warning against being relegated to mere consumers.
Jaishankar also suggested reducing dependency on the Global North for technology and international cooperation frameworks. He argued that artificial intelligence should remain “human-centered” and that tools and frameworks developed within the Global South should be shared for mutual benefit.
Rather than relying solely on the Global North, he proposed that alternative frameworks such as the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure could drive essential progress in climate action.
