Bhopal, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : Political tensions are rising in Madhya Pradesh as BJP leaders make controversial remarks regarding Garba celebrations ahead of the upcoming Sharad Navratri festival. With just weeks to go before the festivities commence on October 11, the discourse surrounding the participation of non-Hindus in Garba events has ignited a heated debate.
Usha Thakur, the legislator from Mahu, has voiced support for restricting participation in Garba events to Hindu organizations. She emphasized that Garba should be linked solely to religious rituals, arguing that it must not be commercialized. Thakur claimed that some individuals disguise themselves as Hindus by applying tilak and wearing sacred threads to gain entry into Garba venues. She called for identity verification at these events and insisted that non-Hindus should be barred from entering Garba pandals.
Thakur further stated that the Sanatani community should study religious texts and weaponry, while encouraging women to develop themselves in all aspects and be prepared to defend their religion, culture, and nation.
These comments came just a day after another BJP legislator, Rameshwar Sharma, sparked controversy by questioning the presence of Muslim men at Garba events. Speaking at a public gathering in Bhopal, Sharma suggested that Muslim men should bring their sisters and daughters along if they wish to participate. He added that their involvement should be contingent on their willingness to chant “Jai Shri Ram” and apply tilak.
Sharma cautioned against the potential misuse of Garba events for “love jihad” and warned that the youth are ready to respond to any such attempts.
Congress legislator Arif Masood criticized these statements, labeling the language used as offensive. The ongoing remarks from BJP leaders have transformed the discussion around participation and identity verification at Garba events into a significant political issue once again.
As the Sharad Navratri festival approaches, the political landscape in Madhya Pradesh continues to be shaped by these contentious debates.
