Controversy Erupts Over Bharat Ratna Proposal for Veer Savarkar

New Delhi, February 9: The political landscape has intensified following a statement from Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), advocating for Veer Savarkar to be awarded the Bharat Ratna. Opposition leaders have responded strongly, labeling the proposal as controversial.

CPI(M) MP John Brittas reacted to Bhagwat’s statement, asserting that awarding Savarkar the Bharat Ratna would mark a regrettable chapter in India’s history. He emphasized that Savarkar is known not for his contributions to the freedom struggle, but for seeking forgiveness from the British. Brittas described him as a figure associated with hatred, divisive politics, and polarization. He warned that granting the highest civilian honor to Savarkar would be a day of misfortune for the nation.

Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai also expressed sharp criticism regarding the issue. He questioned the implications of establishing a tradition of awarding Bharat Ratna to those who seek forgiveness. Rai raised concerns about whether we want to teach our children that in times of struggle, one should apologize to oppressive forces. He firmly believes that the citizens of the country will not accept such a mindset.

During the discussion, Rai also commented on statements made by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi regarding Uttar Pradesh. Referring to Owaisi’s remark, “Yogi Ji, I am coming,” Rai suggested that Owaisi should instead say, “Yogi Ji, I am being sent, please take care of me.”

Additionally, Rai addressed comments made by the UP president of Owaisi’s party about a “burqa-wearing woman becoming Chief Minister.” He advised that Owaisi should focus on becoming an MLA first before discussing aspirations for the Chief Minister position.
