Mumbai, June 25: A significant political controversy has emerged involving Sanjay Dina Patil, the Member of Parliament from Mumbai North-East, after he used offensive language against journalists and openly threatened them. Patil, who recently switched allegiance from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) to the faction led by Eknath Shinde, faced severe backlash from various political and social groups, prompting him to issue an unconditional public apology.
In a heated moment captured on camera, Patil directed abusive remarks at reporters, demanding they keep their microphones away from him. He stated, “If you come here again, I will beat you and drive you away. Record this on camera. I am saying this in front of the police. Do whatever you want.”
His aggressive behavior and disrespectful language were condemned by Maharashtra’s media organizations and political leaders, who deemed the intimidation of journalists unacceptable. As the controversy escalated, Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde intervened, advising Patil to acknowledge his mistake.
Shinde remarked that personal attacks have increased amid political tensions and party divisions, but elected representatives must maintain decorum with the media.
Following this intervention, Patil retracted his earlier statements and issued an official apology, attributing his outburst to extreme mental stress. He explained that since switching parties, he and his family (including his wife, daughter, and late father) have been subjected to continuous false allegations and humiliating questions.
Patil claimed he had politely asked journalists not to pose further questions, as he had clarified his position. However, he lost his composure when repeatedly questioned about his family. He stated, “I sincerely apologize to the journalism community for my words.”
He also expressed his willingness to cooperate with any police investigation or inquiry regarding the incident.
