Jaipur, August 27: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has approached the Rajasthan High Court against the non-allocation of its election symbol for the upcoming municipal elections in 2026.
Jameel Khan, the AIMIM state president, filed a writ petition against the Rajasthan State Election Commission, demanding the allocation of the party’s designated symbol, ‘Patang’ (kite), for the forthcoming local body elections.
A detailed hearing took place before a bench led by the acting Chief Justice. The court has scheduled its decision for August 31, 2026.
The lawyers representing AIMIM argued that under democratic and constitutional principles, the party should be allowed to contest elections using its established symbol.
Jameel Khan expressed optimism for a favorable ruling from the court, citing previous Supreme Court decisions that bolster AIMIM’s position in similar cases.
This issue has sparked political tensions with Rajasthan’s two major parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress.
Khan accused both parties of opposing the emergence of a strong third political option in the state. He stated, “Neither the BJP nor Congress wants a robust third front to rise in Rajasthan, but the voice of the people and their desire for change cannot be suppressed through administrative or political means.”
The Rajasthan High Court’s decision on August 31 is deemed crucial for AIMIM’s preparations for the municipal elections.
If the court rules in favor of the party, AIMIM will be able to contest elections under its official banner and election symbol. Conversely, if the ruling is unfavorable, the party may consider further legal options.
AIMIM reiterated its commitment to establishing itself as a political alternative in Rajasthan and actively participating in the upcoming municipal elections.
