Congress Nominates Bhagiraj Singh Chauhan for Umreth By-Election in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, April 4: The Congress party has announced Bhagiraj Singh Chauhan as its candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Umreth assembly constituency in Gujarat. This decision was confirmed on Friday by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

Chauhan has held several organizational positions within the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC). Since 2025, he has served as the coordinator for the central region of the GPCC and was previously the state representative from 2020 to 2025.

In addition, he has been appointed as the PCC in-charge for the Nadiad, Mahudha, Thasra, and Galteshwar constituencies for the 2026 elections. Chauhan has also been responsible for the PCC during the Morwa Hadaf by-election in 2020 and the Karjan by-election in 2019. Locally, he served as the president of the Umreth Taluka Panchayat for three consecutive terms from 2000 to 2015.

He has held various leadership roles, including President of the Mahi Katha Vikas Manch in Anand, Secretary of the Akhil Gujarat Kshatriya Manch, and Chairman of the Ahima Seva Cooperative Mandali.

Prior to this, the party appointed four observers for the upcoming by-election, tasked with coordinating the campaign, organizational preparations, and monitoring grassroots feedback. These observers are expected to collaborate with local party units and oversee booth-level activities. According to party sources, this initiative aims to strengthen coordination and ensure that campaign efforts align with the party’s overall electoral strategy in the constituency.

The Umreth assembly seat in Anand district became vacant following the death of BJP MLA Govind Parmar on March 6, necessitating the by-election. The Election Commission has scheduled voting for April 23, with vote counting set for May 4.

The BJP has nominated Harshad Parmar, the son of the late MLA, who currently serves as the Sarpanch of Chikhodara village and President of the Anand Taluka Sarpanch Association.
