New Delhi, July 30: During the monsoon session of Parliament, Congress MPs led by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra staged a protest at the entrance of Parliament. They demanded a response from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the police action against protesters on July 20. The opposition alleged that during the protests, students faced baton charges, tear gas, and pellet guns, and accountability must be established.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition members expressed that the use of force against students and protesters, who were demonstrating peacefully, is a serious concern. They called for the Home Minister to make a statement on the matter in Parliament.
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari stated that the BJP is attempting to evade this issue, while Home Minister Amit Shah is accountable to Parliament under Article 75 of the Constitution. He mentioned that the Congress Parliamentary Party will decide on future strategies in their meeting, and similar issues will be raised in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He emphasized that the opposition is persistently seeking answers from the government, but it is avoiding discussions.
During the protest, Tiwari also raised concerns about financial irregularities related to the construction of the Ram Temple. He noted that he has submitted a notice in Parliament regarding this issue. The temple construction was supposed to occur through a trust established under the Supreme Court‘s directives, but financial discrepancies have arisen in the name of the temple. He claimed that land worth 2 crore rupees was purchased for 17 crore rupees, and 111 crore rupees were spent on the inauguration ceremony.
He accused the government of mishandling the donations collected for the temple and demanded accountability from the central government. The government should respond in the House and take action against those involved, he insisted.
Congress MP K.C. Venugopal also criticized the government, questioning who ordered the police action against students in Delhi, and demanded an answer from the Home Minister. He alleged that the government remains silent on serious issues like firing on students and the use of force. Venugopal stated that opposition leaders are not being given the opportunity to speak in the House, undermining democratic traditions.
Congress MP Ujjwal Raman Singh remarked that if one has to apologize for speaking the truth in the country, it is a regrettable situation for democracy. He questioned who is responsible if students were subjected to pellet guns, tear gas, and other forms of violence. He reiterated that if accusations are being made against the government, it should come forward and respond, yet it continues to evade accountability.
Meanwhile, MP Kapil Sibal stated that if actions like the use of pellet guns occurred, there must have been some level of authorization. He insisted that if it is claimed that permission was granted at the SDM level, the Home Minister should clarify whether that decision was right or wrong.
Sibal accused the BJP of initially denying the use of pellet guns but later admitting to their deployment. The Home Minister’s silence raises many questions, and the government must provide a detailed response on this matter in Parliament.
