BJP Announces Candidates for Jaipur Municipal Corporation Elections, Former Mayor Receives Ticket

Jaipur, August 31: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced its candidates for the 2026 Jaipur Municipal Corporation elections on the final day for nominations. The party faced a significant challenge in distributing tickets across more than 150 wards, as there were concerns about dissatisfied candidates potentially contesting as independents.

Meetings continued late into the night at the BJP’s state office, involving Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, State President Mardan Rathore, and senior party leaders overseeing Jaipur.

After extensive discussions aimed at balancing various political equations, the party officially handed over Form-B documents and election symbols to its selected candidates at the last moment. The candidates comprise experienced party workers, dedicated leaders, women’s wing officials, and former councilors who recently joined the BJP from Congress.

A notable development in the candidate list is the selection of former Jaipur Mayor Jyoti Khandelwal for a ward-level councilor position. Khandelwal, who was the first female mayor of Jaipur and later contested the Lok Sabha elections as a Congress candidate, has now been given the BJP ticket for the 2026 municipal elections. She joined the BJP after leaving Congress during the last assembly elections.

The BJP’s decision to nominate the former mayor has sparked considerable discussion in Jaipur’s political circles. Khandelwal’s political journey has come full circle; she began her career as a Congress ward councilor, became the mayor, and later ran for the Jaipur Lok Sabha seat.

After joining the BJP, she will once again contest for a councilor position, marking a new phase in her political career. While some political analysts view this as an opportunity for Khandelwal to strengthen her grassroots position within the BJP, her supporters see it as another chance to serve the party and the city.

The BJP’s list includes candidates from the Adarsh Nagar assembly constituency and several other key areas in Jaipur. Neeraj Agarwal has been renominated from Ward 121. The former councilor recently switched from Congress to the BJP.

Anuradha Maheshwari, the state vice president of the BJP’s women’s wing, has also been given a ticket and will contest from Ward 107.

The distribution of tickets has led to significant internal competition within the BJP. In many wards, 10 to 15 strong contenders vied for the same seat, creating a scramble for party tickets. One of the main concerns for BJP leadership was to ensure that candidates who did not receive tickets would not file nominations as independents or join rival parties.

As a result, the party opted not to publicly release the complete list of candidates beforehand. Instead, Form-B documents and party symbols were directly handed to selected candidates shortly before the nomination deadline, aiming to limit the possibility of rebellion.

After the nomination process concludes, the BJP’s election machinery will focus on managing dissent within the party and persuading dissatisfied leaders and workers to withdraw their nominations.

The party’s immediate priority is to ensure that rebel candidates withdraw from the elections before the September 2 deadline.
