New Delhi, July 30: The Lok Sabha’s question hour was disrupted on the ninth day of the monsoon session. Speaker Om Birla adjourned the proceedings for the day until 2 PM due to the opposition’s uproar, just two minutes after the session began.
At 11 AM, the parliamentary session commenced with congratulations to India’s medal winners from the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Following this, the Speaker initiated the question hour. However, the opposition began shouting slogans regarding a speech by opposition leader Rahul Gandhi during the debate on the ‘Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill 2026.’
In response to the ongoing chaos, the Speaker stated, “I have repeatedly urged that question hour is a right of the members of Parliament. It is also a time for the government to be held accountable. I have requested everyone in the House and during meetings with floor leaders not to disrupt question hour. It is a crucial time.”
Despite these appeals, the uproar continued. The Speaker asked if the opposition did not wish to proceed with question hour. When the opposition members remained unyielding, Speaker Om Birla decided to adjourn the House until 2 PM.
Earlier, the Anti-Paper Leak Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha by voice vote on Wednesday. After two days of debate, it cleared the way for stringent legal measures to tackle paper leaks and examination-related irregularities. This bill was passed amid widespread protests across the country concerning the NEET paper leak case, which eventually led to the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan from the position of Union Education Minister.
