Kolkata, August 31: The West Bengal Health Department has identified five districts that are highly susceptible to dengue outbreaks. Officials announced this information on Monday, highlighting the growing concern due to changing weather patterns and increased rainfall in the state.
Recent reports indicate a rise in dengue cases and related fatalities in several districts. In light of the increasing number of affected individuals during the past month and the ongoing monsoon season, the state health department has pinpointed these districts as the most vulnerable to dengue.
The identified districts include Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and Murshidabad. A health department official stated, “In addition to dengue, cases of ‘Plasmodium falciparum’ have also emerged in these districts. This is the most dangerous form of malaria, which can severely affect the kidneys.”
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has issued clear directives to hospital officials and doctors to accurately report the number of dengue cases, rather than concealing or downplaying the figures. Such complaints were common during the previous administration led by Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress.
Chief Minister Adhikari emphasized, “All relevant parties have been instructed to provide the correct name of the illness. There is no need to label dengue or malaria cases as ‘unknown fever.’ The previous state government often minimized the number of affected individuals or fatalities, pressuring hospital officials and doctors to report dengue cases as ‘unknown fever.’ We are urging them to disclose everything. What is there to hide? If it is dengue, it will certainly be treated. There is no reason for doctors to fear writing ‘dengue.’ If it is not dengue, they will not write it.”
