Kolkata, August 31: In a significant police operation, nine individuals have been arrested for allegedly running a sex racket at a resort in Lataguri, located in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.
Among those detained are five men, three women, and a resort employee. Reports indicate that the three women hail from Siliguri in North Bengal, while the five men are residents of Assam. An officer from the Malbazar police station confirmed that the arrested individuals will be presented in court today in Jalpaiguri.
Inspector-in-Charge Palzor Bhutia of the Malbazar police station stated that illegal activities at any resort in Lataguri will not be tolerated. He added, “We have arrested several individuals and are investigating which other resorts may be facilitating such illegal activities.”
The operation was led by Sudipta Sarkar, the sub-divisional police officer of Malbazar, along with Inspector Palzor Bhutia and Officer Tenzing Bhutia from the Kranti outpost.
During a raid late Sunday night near the Saraswati Banbasti area in Lataguri, police discovered three women and five men in compromising situations at the resort. A resort employee was also taken into custody.
Initial investigations revealed that the three women arrested were residing in Siliguri. Reports suggest that one is from Haryana, while another is from the Uttar Dinajpur district. They have been living in Siliguri for several years. Allegations indicate that the racket was being operated by a local youth from Lataguri, who fled upon learning of the police raid. Authorities have initiated a search for him.
Officials stated that the raid was conducted based on information received from reliable sources.
This is not the first instance of a sex racket being uncovered in the tourist destination of Lataguri. According to sources from the Malbazar police, complaints about illegal activities at several resorts in Lataguri have been reported for some time. This recent operation was a response to those ongoing concerns.
